The 2026 Symposium on Spatiotemporal Data Science
August 7-8, 2026
Virginia Tech Academic Building One, 3625 Potomac Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22305
Hosted by Virginia Tech and co-sponsored by the NSF-sponsored Spatiotemporal Innovation Center, this symposium aims to promote replicable and expandable spatiotemporal data science with new methodology and innovative technology. The symposium will discuss open data sources, advanced methodology, cutting-edge research, latest technology development in research, education and business applications with a focus on spatiotemporal AI.
The conference will be in a hybrid format (both online and in person), which will include keynote addresses, presentation sessions, and panel discussions.
Keynote Speakers:
- Daniel Sui, Senior Vice President, Virginia Tech
- Jack Kaye, Previous Associate Director for Research of ESD, NASA
- Shaowen Wang, Professor and Associate Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences, UIUC
- Phil Yang, Director of NSF Spatiotemporal Innovation Center, George Mason University

The topics include, but not limited to:
- Digital Twins and Spatiotemporal Intelligence Systems
- Reproducible, Scalable, and Cloud-Native Geospatial Computing
- Spatial Artificial Intelligence: Theory, Causality, and Uncertainty
- Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Foundation Models for Spatial Data
- Generative AI and Agentic Systems in Geospatial Workflows
- Autonomous GIS, Autonomous Spatial Analysis, Modeling, and Research
- Integrated Data Pipelines and Geospatial Data Fusion
- Multiscale, Hierarchical, and Advanced Spatial Modeling
- Data Assimilation and Real-Time Earth Intelligence
- Human–Environment Interaction and Responsible GeoAI
- Decision Intelligence and Translational Applications
There will be a three-day workshop (August 4-6, 2026) on Spatiotemporal AI before the symposium. Core topics include: (1) foundations of spatiotemporal AI; (2) advances in cloud computing for spatiotemporal AI; (3) integration of GeoAI and generative AI in research design, spatial modeling, and applications; (4) future trends of spatiotemporal AI.
The conference is accepting abstract submissions for oral or poster presentations (less than 500 words) before May 25, 2026. Detailed agenda and lodging information will be shared with the authors of accepted submissions. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.
